Former hostage Terry Waite is just a shadow of his former self...a very large shadow. Spotted recently wondering around the shops in central London, the roly poly former envoy for the Church of England shocked fellow shoppers with his outsized appearance, a far cry from the slim and handsome hostage who was released by Islamic terrorists in Beirut in November 1991.

The star still has his trademark beard, but is it just there to hide the telltale jowls that have accompanied his 18 year long comfort food binge? It's not hard to tell that they are. Where once Waite was a top level hostage negotiator who successfully secured the release of many top level religious captives, it now seems the only negotiating Waite likes to do is between his hands, his mouth and a particularly large all you can eat Chinese buffet, washed down with crisps, chocs and fatty fizzy drinks.
"It's so sad to see him like this", an onlooker said, after being reminded who he was with detailed picture evidence.
